Best in Industry, 2012

By The Scientist Staff | June 1, 2012

Whether working for a pharmaceutical giant or a biotech start-up with a unique vision, researchers who responded to this year’s Best Places to Work in Industry survey are translating society’s most pressing scientific needs into a new generation of drugs, research tools, and cutting-edge innovations. Wyatt Technology (#4), with a workforce of around 100 employees, provides instrumentation for the characterization of macromolecules, while the similarly small Genomatica (#8) offers new green and sustainable ways of manufacturing chemicals. And big industry staples such as Bayer (#20), Novartis (#17), and Dow AgroSciences (#7) continue to push the boundaries of health care, agriculture, and materials sciences.

Sal Sadoti, one of several engineering technicians at #1-ranked ADInstruments, tests a prototype of a new software-controlled isolated stimulator.Elayne Penebre analyzes the effects of treatment with one of Epizyme’s histone methyltransferase inhibitors on human lymphoma cells. Epizyme ranked #2 in this year's survey.Researchers at work at the #3-ranked DuPont. In the last year, DuPont launched 1,742 new products and applications. With a workforce of around 100 employees, Wyatt Technology (#4) provides instrumentation for the characterization of macromolecules.Cofounded by Nobel Laureate Thomas Steitz in 2001, 6th-place company Rib-X Pharmaceuticals develops novel antibiotic compounds based on Steitz’s work on the structure and function of the ribosome.Coming in at #7, Dow AgroSciences will be launching the Enlist™ Weed Control System and the sap-feeding insecticide sulfoxaflor this year.Genomatica, this year's #8 company, offers new green and sustainable ways of manufacturing chemicals and received the EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 2011.Newcomer DynPort Vaccine Company, which ranked #9 this year, is based in Frederick, MD. Coming in at #10, Pioneer Hi-Bred: A DuPont Business opened a new $40 million Beaver Creek facility with space for approximately 400 new research positions at the headquarters in Johnston, Iowa earlier this year.Regeneron Pharmaceuticals' (#13) headquarters at Tarrytown, NY.Abbott (#14) scientists are advancing antiviral programs focused on developing treatments for hepatitis C (HCV), a disease that affects more than 180 million people worldwide. Roche ($16) researcher performing quality control of the substances in the analytical laboratory. In the past year, #18 company, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, developed and advanced RNAi therapeutics for treating patients with transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis.Integrated DNA Technologies (#19) headquarters in Coralville, IALast but not least, our #20 company, Bayer Corp, has advanced four medicines into late-stage development in the past year.
